Alex Corretja: Emma Raducanu is not little girl from before, she is star now

Former world No. 2 Alex Corretja preaches patience when it comes to Emma Raducanu as he noted that it will take time for the 19-year-old to adjust to the spotlight and expectation.

Raducanu, who is enjoying a career-high ranking of No. 18 in the world, made tennis history at the US Open when she became the first player ever to win a Grand Slam as a qualifier.

However, Raducanu has struggled post-US Open victory as she has just two wins and four losses.

This week, Raducanu suffered a 6-0 6-1 loss to Elena Rybakina in the Sydney first round.

“She needs to adjust and adapt to a different life, she’s not a little girl from before – she’s a star,” Corretja exclusively told Tennis365.

“And if you are a star it’s a different situation, you need to deal with absolutely, totally different moments and everybody expects a lot from you.

“I think she needs to go slowly, it’s difficult to ask her for more, I don’t think she needs to go out there feeling like she needs to win another Grand Slam soon because she’s good enough to continue with her way and she will find it.”

Corretja tips Raducanu to win more Grand Slams

Corretja admitted he is not sure if Raducanu can win any Grand Slams this season but he is confident the world No. 18 will win eventually win another Grand Slam.

“For sure she will win more Grand Slams and she’s ready to do it but I’m not so sure whether it’s going to be now or maybe she needs a little bit of time to understand how everything works now the players know her a little bit better,” Corretja added.

“They know her weaknesses, they know her strengths.

“But I’m expecting a nice season from her because she’s brave, she’s determined, and I think she’s such a great player.”
