Adelaide International 1: Ashleigh Barty, Elena Rybakina to vie for 2022’s 1st title

Ashleigh Barty reached the final of the Adelaide International 1 on Saturday. The world no. 1 defeated fifth seed Iga Swiatek 6-2, 6-4 in an hour and 27 minutes in their semi-final clash.

Barty hit 14 winners to the Pole’s 13, and had half as many unforced errors as Swiatek, 14 to the latter’s 28. The Australian saved both break points she faced while making good of three of the five break points she had on Swiatek’s serve.

This is Barty’s 20th WTA final. In Adelaide, the home favourite will look to clinch her second title, since winning the 2020 edition of the event.

Adelaide International 1: Ashleigh Barty’s title quest

Post-match, Barty said, “Today I felt like I was probably able to look after my service games really well. I felt like on Iga’s service games I was able to get into most of them, which is important when you’re playing someone who can dominate with that first ball and first strike. I felt like I was able to build pressure over time, making her play a lot of balls on her service games, not giving her too many cheapies. I think all in all I was able to stay in most games. I didn’t get blown away with too many runs of two, three, four points in a row, which was a nice improvement from the last couple matches.”

In Sunday’s final, Barty will take on Elena Rybakina. The Kazakh, seeded seventh in the Adelaide International 1 draw, won the first semi-final played in the day session. Rybakina defeated Misaki Doi, 6-4, 6-3 in an hour and 23 minutes. This is Rybakina’s first time in over two years – since reaching the final of the 2020 Strasbourg International. This will be the second meeting between Ashleigh Barty and Elena Rybakina. Their first meeting, coming in the third round of the 2020 Australian Open, was won by Barty.
