Shelby Rogers reflects on upset win over No. 3 seed Maria Sakkari

World No. 40 Shelby Rogers was thrilled after stunning sixth-ranked Maria Sakkari in her first tournament of the season in Adelaide.

Rogers put up a good performance on Wednesday in Adelaide to claim a surprise 7-6 (5) 2-6 6-4 win over Sakkari.

Rogers has now made back-to-back quarterfinals in Adelaide.

“It’s a great way to start the year. That’s what we want to do, is play the best players every week,” Rogers said, per WTA Insider.

“It helps me to elevate my game to play someone like that.

“But I want to keep going. I want to see what else I can do.”

Rogers didn’t let Sakkari claim a comeback win

Rogers found herself down by a break in the first set but she recovered to force a tie-break, in which she realized her second set point to win a tight opener.

Rogers then started the second set with a 2-0 break but Sakkari responded with three consecutive breaks to win six games in a row and force a decider.

Rogers blew an early third set breal but she broke Sakkari again in the ninth game and routinely served out for the match in the 10th game.

Sakkari, a two-time Grand Slam semiifnalist in 2021, spoke before the match about wanting to have a big 2022 season.

“After having a very good season, I’m curious if I can do that again and if I can do that even better. I believe that I can do even better, but who knows,” Sakkari said, per WTA Insider. “At the same time I’m confident that I can do it.”

Also, Sakkari said her goal was to win Adelaide.

“I’m a bit more relaxed. I am here to win the tournament. It’s just that I know I may not play my best tennis, it’s the first week. I don’t want to put pressure on myself these days,” Sakkari noted.

Unfortunately for Sakkari, she fell short as Rogers plays next against Elena Rybakina.
