Maria Sakkari aims even bigger results in 2022 following breakthrough 2021 season

World No. 6 Maria Sakkari believes she can do even better in 2022 after enjoying a strong 2021 season.

Sakkari made two Grand Slam semifinals last year, debuted at the WTA Finals and broke into the top-10 for the first time in her career.

“After having a very good season, I’m curious if I can do that again and if I can do that even better. I believe that I can do even better, but who knows,” Sakkari said, per WTA Insider.

“At the same time I’m confident that I can do it.”

Sakkari, 26, is set to kick off her 2022 season in Adelaide.

Sakkari debuted at the Adelaide event in 2020 but didn’t impress as she lost in the round-of-16.

“I’m a bit more relaxed. I am here to win the tournament. It’s just that I know I may not play my best tennis, it’s the first week. I don’t want to put pressure on myself these days,” Sakkari noted.

Sakkari on what she changed in 2021

Sakkari enjoyed the best season of her career at the age of 26.

After the season ended, Sakkari credited the change in her approach and mindset for what happened in 2021.

“Reaching my first two Grand Slam semi-finals in one season has been incredible and ending the season in Guadalajara at the WTA Finals really was a dream come true. But it did not happen by mistake,” Sakkari wrote for Player’s Voice. “Before this year, I would say that sometimes I was a little too hard and negative on myself. This season, with the help of surrounding myself with the right people, I’ve concentrated on making my mindset much more positive by manifesting kinder thoughts. I think my results have benefited from that, so I would definitely say that being nice to yourself is always a good idea.”
