The question concerning the number one in the world Novak Djokovic takes on more and more the contours of a mystery. In the end, the Serbian’s non-participation in the ATP Cup, the first tennis event of this 2022, was made official, but no official statement was made and no one knows the real reasons for not participating in the event. All tennis players arriving in Australia must have at least a double dose of the vaccine or a special medical exemption. For any other reason, the Victorian Government will not accept ‘apologies’ from athletes. In the last few hours there had been discussions about a specific and ‘special’ medical exemption for Nole, but the recent forfeit of the Serbian for this team competition seems to be holding back everything. Participation in the Australian Open, the first Grand Slam of the year that will begin on January 17th and which sees Nole as the reigning champion and main favorite to win, is now more than ever in serious doubt. The situation of Novak Djokovic is in strong balance, in recent weeks several tennis players and professionals have commented on the story, but the recent press conference of the Serbian national team clarifies the difficulties and lack of clarity of this situation. With the absence of Nole the number one of the Serbian team became number 33 in the world Dusan Lajovic. During the press conference, he clearly declared that he did not know the real reason for the absence of the champion and legend of his nation and his words leave a lot of astonishment: “We waited for a decision until the last minute and only a day and a half ago it was said that Nole would not participate in the ATP Cup.”
Nole planned a dinner for his entire team
In a recent interview with L’Equipe, Novak Djokovic opened up about his heartbreaking loss to Daniil Medvedev in the final of this year’s US Open. The Serb said the overwhelming support he received from the Arthur Ashe crowd caught him off guard and may have impacted his performance. “When I stepped onto the court for the US Open final, I was overwhelmed with the crowd support. I’m not usually the crowd favorite in big matches. I wasn’t prepared for such a reception. It caught me off guard. I had a different emotional response that maybe affected my game,” Djokovic said. “I had a nice team dinner planned for after the US Open final. I was so emotionally wrecked that I didn’t want to go. But everyone cheered me up and I went. Monica Seles called me crying. It ended up being quite a long, emotional night – it eased my mind,” he said.
