Former world No. 1 Martina Navratilova has tipped Garbine Muguruza to have a big 2022 season.
Muguruza, ranked at No. 3 in the world, didn’t win a Grand Slam title in 2021 but she enjoyed a strong year as she captured her maiden WTA Finals title.
Navratilova was asked to pick who among Muguruza, SImona Halep, Angelique Kerber, Petra Kvitova and Victoria Azarenka will have the strongest year.
“I think Muguruza after how she played in Guadalajara. Not just that she won, but how she comported herself. Her relationship with Conchita is really now paying nice dividends. Conchita is a great tennis mind, and she’ll move her into becoming an even more complete player,” Navratuilova told the WTA.
“Garbiñe really wants it; she’s in a happy place. Her personal life is settled, she has a supportive boyfriend and Conchita is amazing. She’s in a really, really good place and I would be surprised if she doesn’t win a major next year.”
Pam Shriver agrees with Navratilova
Muguruza is a two-time Grand Slam champion and she made it clear after the 2021 season ended that her goal is to win more Majors.
Muguruza has a French Open and Wimbledon title in her collection.
Recently, Muguruza said her goal is to win every Grand Slam.
Muguruza will be aiming to capture her first Australian Open title this January at Melbourne Park.
“Muguruza. She’s the one that’s going to do it. Her being ranked No.3 isn’t that big a deal for her; it’s not rarified air by her standards. Winning the WTA Finals, it was fun to see how excited she and her whole team were. Honestly, this is a player who is accustomed to winning majors. In my mind, she’s the leading candidate among those multi-major winners mentioned that will add to her total in 2022,” Shriver said.
