Thanks to Front Office Sports’ Year on Twitter study, we know which sports stars have been mentioned several times on Twitter. Among them there are also two tennis players, Naomi Osaka and Serena Williams.
Front Office Sports divided the results into different categories, between women, men and teams. In addition to Serena and Naomi, the five most Tweeted female athletes of 2021 are the wrestler Bianca Belair, gymnast Simone Biles and the other wrestler Sasha Banks.
Serena Williams has won 73 WTA singles titles: 23 of these are Grand Slam events (absolute record in the Open Era, men included), making her the second player ever to have won more Majors in this specialty behind only Margaret Smith Court, with 24 .
She completed the virtual Grand Slam, which consists in winning four consecutive Slams not in the same calendar year, twice (in the two years 2002-2003 and 2014-2015). She has also won five year-end Master Cups and 19 Premier category tournaments (6 Premier Mandatory, 6 Premier 5 and 7 Premier), as well as 21 Tier I and Tier II titles and a gold medal from the London Olympics in 2012 against Maria Sharapova.
Not only in singles Serena Williams can boast numerous victories, but also in women’s doubles and mixed doubles, where there are 16 other Grand Slam tournaments: 14 won with her older sister Venus and two in mixed doubles, both obtained with Maks Mirny in 1998. To these successes must be added three other gold medals at the Olympics, all won together with Venus, a Federation Cup and two Hopman Cups.
During her career, Naomi Osaka has won seven WTA titles out of eleven finals played, winning four Grand Slam tournaments: the US Open in 2018 and 2020 and the Australian Open in 2019 and 2021. Following her first Australian success, on the 28 January 2019 she became the first Asian to reach the first place in the world ranking.
Naomi was the first Japanese to win a Grand Slam title and the third in the Open era to qualify for the WTA Finals. In 2019 and 2020 she was the highest paid female athlete ever, grossing $ 37 million and $ 60 million respectively.
On 23 July 2021, at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, she was the torchbearer who lit the Olympic brazier.
