Belinda Bencic experiencing ‘quite severe symptoms’ after testing positive for virus

Former world No. 4 Belinda Bencic tested positive for COVID-19 and she is experiencing “quite severe symptoms.”

Bencic traveled to Abu Dhabi last week to play the Mubadala World Tennis Championships.

In the lone women’s match played at the Mubadala World Tennis Championships, Bencic lost to Ons Jabeur.

“Hi everyone, I just wanted to provide a quick update that unfortunately and even though I’m fully vaccinated, I recently tested positive for COVID-19. I’m currently isolating and taking all precautionary measurements to get through this as best as possible as I’m experiencing quite severe symptoms /fever, aches, chills). While the timing is not ideal – as i was in the final stages of my preparations for the Australian Open swing — I will make my way to Australia as soon as I’m cleared and past the isolation period,” Bencic announced.

Bencic joins Rafael Nadal, Emma Raducanu

Bencic had been scheduled to meet Raducanu in Abu Dhabi but the Briton was pulled out of the event after a positive COVID-19 test.

“I was very much looking forward to playing in front of the fans here in Abu Dhabi, but unfortunately after testing positive for COVID-19, I will have to postpone until the next opportunity,” Raducanu said.

“I’m isolating as per rules and hopefully will be able to get back soon.”

Like Bencic, Nadal tested positive for COVID-10 after returning home from Abu Dhabi.

“Hello everyone. I wanted to announce that on my return home after playing the Abu Dhabi tournament I have tested positive for COVID in the PCR test that has been performed on me when I arrived in Spain,” Nadal said.

“In both Kuwait and Abu Dhabi we passed checks every other day and all came back negative, the last one being on Friday and having the results on Saturday.

“I’m having a few unpleasant moments but I hope to improve little by little. I am now confined at home and have reported the result to people who have been in contact with me.”
