Daria Medvedeva revealed she was just 12 when she met Daniil Medvedev for the first time and she was dining in a cafe courtside with her team and other players while Daniil was playing a match at a junior tournament.
Medvedev, 25, married Daria in 2018 and recently the Russian spoke about the positive impact his wife brings to him.
“Suddenly, we hear someone howling, crying, the sound of a racquet being thrown. My mom asks what’s going on. Veronika Kudermetova’s dad starts laughing, ‘It’s Medvedev playing. You don’t know him?’ We went to watch him. It was something else,” Daria Medvedeva told Tatler.
“Three and a half hour match. Moonballs, 50-shot rallies… From his childhood Danya used to fight till the end, he was prepared to do anything on court, no matter how ugly his game may look, in order to win. In this sense, he hasn’t changed at all.”
Medvedev failed to win the ATP Finals
Medvedev captured his maiden ATP Finals last year and last week he was just a win away from winning back-to-back ATP Finals titles.
In the ATP Finals final, Alexander Zverev saw off Medvedev 6-4 6-4 to win his second title at the season-ending event.
“I didn’t feel amazing,” Medvedev said.
“Tough to say. Maybe some tiredness of the body. Maybe just mentally was not a hundred percent. Not that I didn’t want to be. But, yeah, definitely something was missing. I don’t have the answer to be honest what.
“It made a difference. Even when it (his serve) was in, was not really going on the line, didn’t have this spark, if we can say like this, on it. Wasn’t enough. Sascha is a great player to be able to break me two times, which actually sometimes is in a way not too bad. When you play in a Masters final on a fast surface, somebody serving like Sascha, it’s enough to win the match.”
