Andy Murray to challenge Rafael Nadal, Dominic Thiem in Abu Dhabi

A three-time Major winner Andy Murray completed this year’s Mubadala World Tennis Championship, joining Rafael Nadal, Dominic Thiem, Andrey Rublev, Denis Shapovalov and Casper Ruud. The 13th edition of the Mubadala World Tennis Championship takes place at the International Tennis Centre at Zayed Sports City in Abu Dhabi between December 16-18, returning to the calendar after not being held in 2020. Andy returns to Abu Dhabi for the first time since 2016, seeking the third title after lifting the trophy in the first edition in 2009 and six years later. World no. 134 played 29 ATP matches this season, struggling with injuries in the first part of the season and competing in almost every week since August. Murray lost a thrilling five-setter at the US Open against Stefanos Tsitsipas and reached the quarter-final in Metz.

The Briton defeated two rivals in Indian Wells before losing to Alexander Zverev in two tight sets after over two hours. In Antwerp, a week later, Andy battled past Frances Tiafoe in three tie breaks after three hours and 45 minutes, passing another physical test and pushing Diego Schwartzman to the limits before falling in two tight sets. Murray’s first top-10 victory of the season came against Hubert Hurkacz in Vienna, and the second followed in Stockholm versus Jannik Sinner. Andy decided to skip the Davis Cup Finals and finish the season in Abu Dhabi against strong rivals.¬†

Andy Murray will seek the third Mubadala World Tennis Championship title.

“I’ve got many happy memories of Abu Dhabi, and I’m looking forward to returning. With Emma Raducanu also playing on day one, we will be flying the flag for British tennis and looking to put on a strong display,” Andy Murray said.

“The draw is always a milestone moment, but it feels a bit extra special this year as we look forward to the return of our Championship with full capacity. Andy has a special place in Abu Dhabi, standing as the first champion of this tournament back in 2009. With his return completing our line-up, this year’s field is one of the strongest in the Championship’s history with the perfect blend of youth and experience, Abu Dhabi crowd favorites and exciting debutants. It’s shaping up to be a fantastic three-day festival on and off the court,” John Lickrish, CEO, Flash Entertainment, said.
