Novak Djokovic: “Venus and Serena Williams are Icons”

Novak Djokovic has always said that he was inspired by numerous tennis players from the present and the past. Among these, there are also the Williams sisters. During the presentation of the film King Richard, which focused on the rise of Venus and Serena, the 20-time Grand Slam champion sent a beautiful message.

Djokovic in fact said: “Everything Venus and Serena Williams have done on and off the pitch has been helpful to the other players. Sport in general owes a lot to the Williams sisters.

Their persistence and longevity are nothing short of exceptional. Also, their willingness to keep writing new pages of tennis history is something that motivates me to follow in their footsteps. “

The Belgrade champion cited an anecdote dating back to 2015: “Venus and Serena are icons of tennis, I myself am a huge fan of theirs. I remember when Serena and I won the Wimbledon trophy in the same year. We danced together as usual, there we had a great time and had a lot of laughs.”

Nole, the from ATP Finals to the Australian Open 2022

Nole is busy this week at the ATP Finals in Turin. The seeding number 1 will face Alexander Zverev for a place in the final. Djokovic wrote further pages of history in 2021, confirming that he is one of the greatest athletes of the modern era. The number 1 in the world has won three majors this year, close to the ‘Calendar Grand Slam’.

If successful at Flushing Meadows, the Serbian phenomenon would become the second man in the Open Era after Rod Laver to clinch all four Grand Slams in the same season. The 34-year-old from Belgrade still managed to close the gap that separated him from eternal rivals Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal in the all-time ranking.

If he were to participate in the Australian Open 2022, the much desired overtaking could materialize. King Roger underwent surgery on his right knee for the third time and will not be back on the pitch until summer 2022, while Rafa is expected to attend the Happy Slam.
