Jason Young became the second winner of the European eTour Global Finals as he defeated fmagnets in the championship match to win the US$30,000 first prize. Better known in-game as Young46, the American backed up his victory in last month’s Nedbank Golf Challenge eTour event with a 3&2 win in the final, delivering virtual golf of the highest quality. He made just one par in a final littered with birdies as he secured his second win of the 2021 season. Eight of the world’s best World Golf Tour (WGT) players took part in the thrilling event, which was live-streamed on the European Tour’s YouTube channel. The competitors played on the Torrey Pines, St Andrews and Pebble Beach courses on the popular game.
Jason Young, statements
“It feels great,” said Young46, who won his third European eTour title. “I had so much confidence coming into this event and practiced my tail off – putted well and hit some clutch shots when I needed to. “I think I made one par and played pretty flawlessly. It feels amazing. My wife puts up with me practicing a ton, it wouldn’t have been possible without her. I’d like to say a huge thanks to the European Tour for putting this on, it changes lives and we hope to see it again next year.” Young46 started the Global Finals with a quarter final victory over compatriot Stuman66 and then defeated last year’s champion golfx3 2&1 at Torrey Pines in the semi-final. fmagnets booked his place in the final after defeating BlaisAlex, who knocked out number one seed JSmithers in the quarter final, 3&2 at St Andrews.
The Englishman provided the highlight of the final, a hole-in-one on the 11th which brought the match all-square after a back and forth front nine. Young46 replied immediately as he retook the lead on the 12th hole and moved to 3Up after birdies on the 14th and 15th holes. Both players hit it close on the par three 16th hole at Torrey Pines, with fmagnets conceding the birdie putt to hand Young46 his second victory of the season. “I’m not going to be happy with that for a few days. But looking back on it I’ll be pleased with a small amount of progress,” said fmagnets, who won the US$10,000 runner-up prize. “Hats off to Jason and well done”.
