Roger Federer: ‘Doctors do not know this, but I have already played tennis with..’

The 20-time Major champion Roger Federer has played only 19 matches since the start of 2020, struggling with a knee injury and undergoing three surgeries within a year and a half. The Swiss experienced problems after the last year’s Australian Open, skipping the rest of the season and staying away from the court for 13 months before returning this March in Doha. Federer played five tournaments in 2021 and scored seven wins at Roland Garros and Wimbledon. Roger became the oldest Wimbledon quarter-finalist in the Open era, passing the opening four obstacles before suffering a heavy loss to Hubert Hurkacz, who bageled him in the third set. The veteran did not look good on the court against the Pole, struggling with timing and spraying too many unforced errors for one of his worst sets in the past 15 years.

Roger Federer is recovering from a third knee surgery.

To make things even worse, Federer still felt the pain in his knee and decided to take another break and undergo a third surgery. The Swiss called it a season in August, and he has to endure another recovery process to get back at 100% and extend his career, at least for a couple of more tournaments. Roger hopes to get back on the practice court in March or April, although he has already played tennis with his kids at home. The veteran targets the second part of the 2022 season as a possible comeback time, not expecting to find himself in the Wimbledon draw but wishing to play again after that.

“The doctors say that I will jog lightly in January and gradually return to the court in gentle steps. They do not know this, but I have already played a bit of tennis with the kids. If everything goes right, I can start training again in a tennis-like way in March or April. I had this operation done to ski with my children and play football and tennis in the future. My primary motivation was to get back in shape for my everyday life, although I wanted to approach this rehabilitation with the mentality and body of a top athlete. As far as my sporting ambitions are concerned, I want to see what I can achieve as a tennis pro once again. I’m fighting for it, and I’m very motivated. I feel the support of my team and family. We all wish that I could say goodbye on my own terms and on the court,” Roger Federer said.
