Hubert Hurkacz: I found out I’d face Jannik Sinner in middle of warm up

World No. 9 Hubert Hurkacz claimed he was in the middle of his warm up when he was told he would face Jannik Sinner on Tuesday at the ATP Finals.

On Sunday, Matteo Berrettini was forced to retire his opener to Alexander Zverev.

Hurkacz was projected to meet Berrettini on Tuesday but he knew there was a chance he could face Sinner.

As expected, Berrettini pulled out and was replaced by Sinner.

Sinner then dominated Hurkacz 6-2 6-2 in his first-ever match played at the ATP Finals.

“In fact, I kind of found out in the middle of my warm-up who I was going to face. Of course, I knew Matteo had pulled out of his match against Zverev early in the second set, so I knew there was a chance he could be substituted. Even though I have prepared myself to face both players, it’s difficult to deal with it,” Hurkacz said after the loss, per We Love Tennis.

Sinner delivered a strong performance against Hurkacz in Turin

Sinner broke Hurkacz twice in each set en route to claiming a comfortable straight-set win.

“I knew around 5 (p.m.) that I would play,” Sinner said. “I was ready to go on court. It is an incredible feeling playing here in Italy with thousands of people cheering for you and I am trying my best. I will enjoy the moment. I played well and felt good in the warm up. It was an incredible match today.”

Sinner claimed he felt sorry for Berrettini and insisted he would play for his fellow compatriot in Turin.

“Matteo has been unlucky many, many times in his career and I wish him all the best,” Sinner said. “I am going to play for him at this tournament because he deserves to be here. I will give my best and it is a highlight playing here.”
