ATP Finals: Nikola Mektic, Mate Pavic clinch key win to book semifinal spot

Croafia’s Nikola Mektic and Mate Pavic have secured the final semifinal spot at the ATP Finals. 

Mektic and Pavic, who have won nine titles in 2021, beat Ivan Dodig and Filip Polasek 6-4 7-6 (6) in a direct battle for the final semifinal spot from their group. 

Mektic and Pavic made a good start to the match, having broken Dodig and Polasek in the fifth game. 

Mektic and Pavic blew four break points in the seventh game but served out for the opener in the 10th game. 

After losing the first set, Dodig and Polasek started the second set with a 2-0 lead. 

However, their lead was short-lived as Mektic and Pavic broke back in the third game. 

As no more break were seen, the set went into a tie-break. 

Mektic and Pavic failed to convert their first set point but realized their second match point to book a straight-set win. 

Mektic, Pavic join Marcel Granollers and Horacio Zeballos in the semifinal 

In the first doubles match of the day at the ATP Finals, Kevin Krawietz and Horia beat Granollers and Zeballos 6-3 6-7 (1) 10-6. 

Krawietz and Tecau saved two break points in the first game of the match and three more in the third game. 

After saving a total of five break points, Krawietz and Tecau claimed the first break of the match in the sixth game. 

Krawietz and Tecau then routinely served out for the opener in the ninth game. 

Krawietz and Tecau had the lone break points of the second set but Granollers and Zeballos saved two break points in the fifth game. 

The tie-break was one-sided as Granollers and Zeballos lost just one point and managed to force a decider. 

After winning the second set, Granollers and Zeballos started the match tie-break with a 2-0 lead. 

However, Krawietz and Tecau kept their focus as they won seven of the following eight points to take a 7-3 lead. 

Krawietz and Tecau then took a 9-4 lead, before realizing their third match point to book a three-set win. 

Granollers and Zeballos stil made the semifinal as they finished the group with a 2-1 record. 

It was the last match of Tecau’s career as the Romanian announced he would retire after the season-ending event.
