WTA Finals: Garbine Muguruza to vie for title against Anett KKontaveit

Garbine Muguruza and Anett Kontaveit will play each other in the final of the WTA Finals in Guadalajara on Wednesday after coming through their respective semi-final. Theirs will be a rematch of their round-robin match of the Teotihuacán Group.

In the first semi-final, Muguruza defeated Paula Badosa in the Spanish derby. The former world no. 1 won 6-3, 6-3 in an hour and 25 minutes. She’s the first Spaniard since Arantxa Sanchez Vicario to have reached the final of the season-ending tournament. Sanchez Vicario reached the final of the season final in 1993 when it was held in New York.

After her win, Muguruza said, “I think it’s the best match that I played so far here in Guadalajara. It was a tough match facing another Spaniard in the semi-finals… We’ve never faced each other before, so it was tricky.” The two-time Grand Slam champion also credited her compatriot for the year she’s had. “…Very proud of Paula. She started the year far in the rankings, and now she’s a Top 10 player. Very impressive. She deserves a very well rest. Very happy for her year.”

Kontaveit said that she was surprised by her run in Mexico. “I still can’t quite believe that I’m even here and I’m playing against the best players at such a prestigious tournament. I’m just so proud of myself that I managed to do this and so happy to be competing at this level and just trying to take it all in,” the eighth seed said.
