France’s Pierre-Hugues Herbert and Nicolas Mahut lost a thriller to Rajeev Ram and Joe Salisbury at the ATP Finals on Wednesday.
Herbert and Mahut, who are chasing their second title at the ATP Finals, blew two match points as Ram and Salisbury claimed a 6-7 (7) 6-0 13-11 win.
Herbert and Mahut had a great chance to start the match with a break but Ram and Salisbury saved four break points in the opening game.
Ram and Salisbury failed to convert their first break point in the sixth game but saved another break point in the seventh game.
As no breaks were seen — the first set went into a tie-break — in which Ram and Salisbury blew two set points before Herbert and Mahut realized their first set point to win a tight opener.
Blowing two set points didn’t affect Ram and Salisbury as they broke Herbert and Mahut three times in the second set to force a decider.
After easily losing the second set, Herbert and Mahut regrouped in the match tie-break as they clinched a match point at 9-8.
Unfortunately for Herbert and Mahut, they failed to convert match points at 9-8 and 10-9.
After saving two match points, Ram and Salisbury took a 11-10 lead.
Ram and Salisbury failed to convert their first match point but earned their second match point — which they realized to edge out Herbert and Mahut and improve to 2-0 in the group.
Herbert and Mahut still have a chance to make the semifinal
After the first two matches, Herbert and Mahut own a 1-1 record.
In the first doubles match of the day at the ATP Finals, Juan Sebastian Cabal and Robert Farah saw off Jamie Murray and Bruno Soares 6-2 6-4.
Cabal and Farah made a strong start to the match, having broken Murray and Soares twice to routinely win the opener.
After winning the first set, Cabal and Farah broke Murray and Soares twice to take a comfortable 5-2 lead.
Murray and Soares got one break back and reduced the deficit to 5-4 but Cabal and Farah served out for the match in the 10th game.
Cabal and Farah now own a 1-1 record, while Murray and Soares stand at 0-2.
Herbert and Mahut will play Murray and Soares in their final group stage match.
