Bernd Wiesberger: “I need to keep pushing”

Bernd Wiesberger was determined to keep his foot down after a second round 66 put him right in the mix heading into the weekend at the 2021 AVIV Dubai Championship. Antoine Rozner was 25 under in lifting the trophy last season and a similar score could be on the cards again, with the field playing in perfect conditions over the Fire Course at Jumeirah Golf Estates. Wiesbgerger was 11 under after scores of 67-66 over days one and two but was fully aware those standards would have to be maintained for him to claim a second win of the 2021 Race to Dubai.

Bernd Wiesberger, statements

“My game looks good, if I can keep progressing like this, a couple of shots better each day, I’ll be in a pretty good spot. Everything is there, just be committed and be positive because it’s a low scoring week, you really need to be positive towards the flags and set up a lot of chances. Even though I haven’t been quite pleased with my scoring on the par fives, I let a couple slip there, I just need to keep pushing at the weekend.”

Birdies at the second, fourth, sixth, seventh and eighth saw him play the front nine in 31 and the Ryder Cup star was happy to keep pace with the low scoring.

“I built my scoring on those last ten holes, it felt out there like there was no wind and you needed to make a push like the guys did yesterday. I wasn’t quite happy with how the first eight holes played out – a couple of mistakes out there. I really started playing better golf from the 18th hole, my ninth, onwards and I gave myself a lot of chances. I holed a couple of nice putts on the back nine especially towards the end, but I had a few more chances out there so the course is there for the taking and I did well today”.
