WTA Finals: Unrelenting Anett Kontaveit reaches SF; Garbine Muguruza grabs first win

Anett Kontaveit and Garbine Muguruza were the winners in their second round-robin matches of the Teotihuacan Group at the WTA Finals in Guadalajara, on Friday. For Kontaveit, while this meant an assured berth in the semi-finals, Muguruza ensured that she was in the reckoning for a place in the semi-finals alongside Karolina Pliskova and Barbora Krejcikova.

In the day session, Kontaveit romped over Pliskova 6-4, 6-0 in just 57 minutes. Heading into the match, it was the Czech who had the upper hand in their head-to-head winning all three of their prior meetings. However, Kontaveit kept her in a chokehold all-throughout the match, carrying this momentum right up to her win.

WTA Finals: Garbine Muguruza fights on

Post-match, in her press conference, Kontaveit said that she wasn’t too focused on her record against the world no. 4. “I think I wasn’t thinking about the fact that I was 3-0 down in previous matches (against Pliskova). I think every time you step on the court, you have a new opportunity. The previous matches don’t really matter. It’s a new day and you have to beat the player you’re playing against. That’s how I approach the match. I think it’s just really trusting my shots a little bit more, just going for it, but going for it with margins. I think that’s been very important, not to go for too much, but still stay aggressive and be in charge whenever possible. When it’s not possible, just stay in the rallies, be as consistent as possible,” she said.

Kontaveit’s last round-robin match will be against Muguruza.

Garbine Muguruza, meanwhile, came from a set down in her match against Pliskova’s fellow countrywoman, Barbora Krejcikova. The Spaniard needed two hours and 10 minutes to complete a 2-6, 6-3, 6-4. Krejcikova began the match on a dominant note, perhaps taking a cue from her previous two wins against the former world no. 1 this season. However, as the match progressed, Muguruza was able to override Krejcikova’s tactics and impose her game on the court which eventually accounted for her win. Looking for a place in the WTA Finals’ semi-final, Krejcikova and Pliskova will have a derby showdown in the Teotihuacan Group’s final round-robin meeting.
