Maria Sakkari on dominance versus Iga Swiatek: I have good game to play her

World No. 6 Maria Sakkari was thrilled with the way she performed against 2020 French Open champion Iga Swiatek in her opener at the WTA Finals. 

Sakkari, who made two Grand Slam semifinals this year, saw off former world No. 4 Swiatek 6-2 6-4 in her WTA Finals debut. 

Sakkari has now played Swiatek three times and now she has three straight-set wins over the Pole..

“I think it was a very solid match from my side,” Sakkari said in her post-match press conference. “Obviously my serve really helped my game. I felt quite good with the altitude. I could control my shots pretty well. I think every day I’ll feel even better,” Sakkari said after the match, per the WTA website. 

Sakkari feels her game is perfect to play Swiatek 

“I actually have a good game to play against [Swiatek]. All three times I played her, I played one of the best matches of the season. Like even today, I think I was very solid in these conditions,” Sakkari added. 

“I’m very proud that I can be the first woman, Greek woman, to actually represent my country into the Top 10 and of course in this tournament. It feels amazing to be able to travel around the world playing these tournaments, being one of the best players, and being from my country. I’m very, very proud of that.”

Sakkari made a positive start of the match as she claimed the first break of the match in the third game. 

Sakkari saved two consecutive break points in the sixth game, before earning her second break in the seventh game..

Sakkari then realized her first set point in the following game. 

Swiatek performed better in the second set but Sakkari managed to break the Pole in the seventh game..

Sakkari then routinely served out for the match in the 10th game.
