Daniil Medvedev on practicing with Novak Djokovic: Not afraid he’ll see my weak side

World No. 2 Daniil Medvedev insists he is not afraid practicing with Novak Djokovic will expose some of his weaknesses.

Medvedev and Djokovic have had the best rivalry of 2021 but they have a good relationship off the court and they often practice together

“You have to practise with other players,” said Medvedev, per the ATP Finals website. “I think if you think, ‘Oh my, he’s going to see my weak side’, your life in tennis will be too tough. You’d only be able to play with your sparring partner. You also need to play with the best players in the world to improve. We were the only ones yesterday that knew we wouldn’t play each other in the group stages.

“The level of our matches will always be high, but you will try to adapt your style. I tried to re-watch the Australian Open final for the US Open final, and Novak watched the US Open match to change things [in Paris]. We both did the right things [in Paris], but he played better on the day. You know nothing will ever come easily and you need to fight throughout the match.”

Djokovic showed his respect for Medvedev

Djokovic beat Medvedev in the Australian Open final but the Russian for his revenge over the Serb in the US Open final..

Last week, Djokovic recovered from a set down to beat Medvedev in the Paris Masters final.

“There’s always pressure playing my biggest rival in tennis at the moment in the season, but I didn’t want to be in a stressful mode,” Djokovic said after the Paris final. “Daniil is : big serve, moves well for his height, and no hole in his game. He always makes you play and has ways to come back into the point from difficult positions. His movements are fantastic. You see his devotion on daily basis. A nice guy, all-around player.

“Medvedev is the leader of the new generation of players.”
