Daniil Medvedev: I was low on confidence in late 2020 but won Paris, ATP Finals

World No. 2 Daniil Medvedev revealed he was low on confidence before the last two tournaments of the 2020 season but found his game and ended the season on the best possible way..

Medvedev, 25, finished 2020 with back-to-back titles at the Paris Masters and ATP Finals.

Medvedev finished runner-up in Paris last week but he is confident he can win the ATP Fins.

“Tennis is so much about ups and downs, gaining of confidence. Coming into Paris last year I felt completely out of shape, low on confidence and not sure what I could achieve in the last two tournaments of the year. I found my tennis and confidence to win both of them, and of course I beat Novak [Djokovic], Rafa [Nadal] and Dominic [Thiem] at the [Nitto ATP] Finals. Three really tough match ups,” Medvedev said, per the ATP Finals website.

“It was amazing, and that gave me confidence in Australia. After you re-watch [matches] on YouTube, your confidence is back. You think, ‘I’m still able to do it.’

“We had the pandemic when we didn’t play for a long time [in 2020 and] I had some problems with my body. So coming back was not easy, but these two tournaments last year brought back my confidence. It was enough for all this year, knowing that I could beat the best players in the world.”

Medvedev won the ATP Finals in his second attempt

Medvedev made his ATP Finals debut in 2019.

It was a nightmare debut for Medvedev, who lost each of his three group stage matches.

The most painful defeat at the 2019 ATP Finals for Medvedev came in his second match at the tournament.

Medvedev was up 5-1 in the third set against Rafael Nadal and even had a match point but ended up losing the match in a third-set tie-break..

Medvedev returned to the ATP Finals last year and bounced back in style as he went a perfect 5-0 to win the title..
