Maria Sakkari: It wasn’t nice to see nice girl Iga Swiatek struggling

World No. 6 Maria Sakkari offered kind words for 2020 French Open champion Iga Swiatek following their clash at the WTA Finals.

Sakkari, 26, saw off Swiatek 6-2 6-4 in her WTA Finals debut.

Swiatek was struggling to play her game and after the match admitted the stress was too big for her.

“I mean, yeah, more than anything we’re human,” Sakkari said after the match, per Tennis Now. “Okay, it’s another tennis match. She’s only 20 years old. She’s going to have many more chances than I’ll have in the future because it’s only the beginning for her.”

Sakkari wasn’t thrilled to see Swiatek struggling

Sakkari broke Swiatek in the first set to comfortably win the opener.

Sakkari then broke Swiatek once in the second set and allowed no break points to book a straight-set win.

“I saw that she was struggling,” she told reporters. “It wasn’t a nice thing to see from the other side of the net. She’s a very, very nice girl. I mean, we always have great practices and great chats.”

After the match, Swiatek felt “ashamed” of her performance against Sakkari.

“I was just frustrated and sad that I couldn’t overcome the stress,” Swiatek said after the match, per WTA Insider. “I keep, like, forgetting that I still have time to learn how to do that because playing in the Finals for me, it feels like I know a lot about sports, which is maybe sometimes not true because still I haven’t been in many situations in those moments. When I forget this is new to me, still it’s okay to lose some matches because of the stress.

“For me, I feel like it’s a big deal and I’m feeling a little bit ashamed that my level was like that. So I was just feeling pretty said.”
