Sofia Kenin reunites with father following disappointing 2022 season

American tennis star Sofia Kenin has announced that her father will return to her coaching team for the 2022 season.

Kenin captured her maiden Grand Slam title at the Australian Open last year but decided to split with her father earlier this year.

Following a struggling 2021 season, Kenin decided to re-employ her father.

“This year has been a very bumpy road for me,” she wrote on Instagram on Tuesday.

“I’m finally back to training and doing what I love! I’m happy to have my dad in my life who has always been there for me through thick and thin.

“Excited that he’s part of my team and I’m super excited to get back on court competing again next year.”

Kenin and her dad split in May

“I had great success with my dad, and I felt like now was the time for me to do what I wanted to do myself in terms of my tennis, my career,” Kenin announced in March. “That’s why I decided that I had to part ways with my dad, it’s not like in the future we’re not going to get back. We don’t know what’s going to happen. I think for now I just need some time for myself, figure things, grow as a person and then, we’ll just see what’s gonna happen down the road.”

Kenin played her last tournament of the season at Wimbledon.

Kenin was hoping to play the US Open but a positive COVID-19 test prevented her from playing at Flushing Meadows.

“Hi guys..I am writing with disappointing news,” Kenin announced in August. “Recently, I tested positive for Covid-19. Fortunately I am vaccinated and thus my symptoms have been fairly mild. However I have continued to test positive and thus will not be able to compete at the US Open next week.

“I plan to spend the next several weeks getting healthy and preparing to play well this fall. Thank you all for supporting me. I want to wish all the players the best of luck in New York.”
