‘I liked the way Roger Federer made everything look easy’, says Top 10

Roger Federer is the idol of many tennis players and sportsmen in general. The former world number 1 was a wonderful example of class and longevity, having remained at the highest levels for a long period of time. The last two seasons have been particularly difficult for the King, who has undergone three operations on his right knee. His appearances on the pitch have become more and more sporadic from 2020 to today, so much so that the shadow of retirement has become increasingly cumbersome on the 20-time Grand Slam champion. The Swiss phenomenon played the misery of 13 official matches in 2021, collecting nine wins and four defeats. After a clear elimination in the quarter-finals at Wimbledon, the 40-year-old from Basel has announced that he has to close his season early to heal his knee. Despite the hopes fueled by Darren Cahill in recent days, it seems unlikely to see the Maestro already at the Australian Open 2022. Ivan Ljubicic himself admitted that there is no precise plan for Federer’s return to the tour. In a recent interview for the ATP website, Matteo Berrettini and Juventus player Paulo Dybala expressed their admiration for Roger.

Berrettini pays tribute to Federer

“I always had Ronaldinho as my idol, for his class and for how he had fun on the pitch,” Dybala said. Matteo Berrettini then revealed he liked how his idol, Roger Federer, had the ability to make the game look effortless, just like Ronaldinho. The Italian also marveled at Federer’s “elegance” and overall demeanor. “Personally, I never hid that I grew up idolizing Roger [Federer]. I liked the way he made everything look easy, almost like Ronaldinho,” Berrettini told Dybala. “The way he was on the court, his elegance, the way he speaks, the vibe he gives. I think that this is the most beautiful thing about sports in general – for me personally, I don’t know if it’s the same for you – when people send me videos or they show me kids wearing the backwards hat, telling me they hit the forehand like me, those things are the reasons I do what I do. And to think they watch me like I watched Federer, is amazing,” Matteo Berrettini told Paulo Dybala. Roger Federer has won 20 Grand Slam titles, whereas Serena Williams has triumphed over 23 Grand Slam singles titles. Federer and Serena have also achieved the World No.1 spot multiple times in their careers. Subsequently, the duo has earned a lot of money playing at the highest level.
