DP World Tour, a new ora for European Tour

It will be called DP World Tour and no longer European Tour. Because it will go around the world, but also because “DP World” is the name of a multinational company based in Dubai which in 2018 had a turnover of 8.5 billion dollars and which decided to invest further in golf. The announcement staged in Dubai by the now former European Tour, in the presence of Sultan Ahmed bin Sulayem, president and CEO of DP World, is a revolutionary announcement. An answer, perhaps, also to the nascent “Superlega” of the “green” supported by PIF, the sovereign investment fund of Saudi Arabia which will finance at least 10 events of the Asian Tour.

In view of the 50th anniversary of the birth of the European Tour, founded in 1972, a new era for golf is thus opening. And the turning point is important. From next season (starting November 25th from South Africa) the DP World Tour will boast at least 47 tournaments in 27 different countries with the total prize pool of events that will exceed $ 200 million. No appointment can have a prize pool of less than 2,000,000. While there will be five (compared to four in 2021) the Rolex Series tournaments: the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship, the Dubai Desert Classic, the Genesis Scottish Open, the BMW PGA Championship and the DP World Tour Championship (which will give away 10 million dollars). As previously announced, there are three events organized in collaboration with the PGA Tour: the Genesis Scottish Open, the Barbasol Championship and the Barracuda Championship.

The dates of the Italian Open, scheduled from 15 to 18 September 2022, always on the course of the Marco Simone Golf & Country Club in Guidonia Montecelio (Rome), theater of the Ryder Cup 2023, have also been official. From South Africa to the United Arab Emirates, also passing through the USA, Japan, Belgium and Italy. A world tour that will begin on November 25, 2021 and will end on November 20, 2022. Here is the new DP World Tour.

“The DP World Tour marks a sensational turning point for European golf, which sees its borders broaden, entering a global dimension”. These are the statements of Franco Chimenti, president of the Italian Golf Federation. “The announcement made by Keith Pelley is momentous and represents great news for the international golf movement. The transition from European Tour to DP World Tour brings all tournaments to a global dimension”, said Gian Paolo Montali, general manager of the Ryder Cup 2023 project.
