Ekaterina Alexandrova crashed out in the first round of the Upper Austria Ladies Linz on Monday. The Russian fifth seed, the only seeded player to play on the second day of main draw play, lost to qualifier Lesia Tsurenko. The Ukrainian won in straight sets 6-4, 7-6(2) in an hour and 39 minutes.
Tsurenko won 59% of her first-serve points and 61% of her second-serve points. In comparison, Alexandrova won 54% of her first-serve points and 43% of her second-serve points. For the match, Tsurenko finished with 80 points to Alexandrova’s 66.
Upper Austria Ladies Linz: Belgians advance, all but one Frenchwomen stutter
In the second round, the former world no. 23 will play Alison Van Uytvanck. The Belgian easily dispatched Austrian wildcard, Sinja Kraus 6-1, 6-0 in 52 minutes.
Another Belgian and Van Uytvanck’s fiancée, Greet Minnen also reached the second round. Minnen beat France’s Oceane Dodin 6-4, 6-3 in an hour and 24 minutes. Minnen will take on third seed Danielle Collins for a place in the quarter-finals.
Dodin’s compatriot, Harmony Tan, too, exited the Austrian event in the first round. Rebecca Peterson of Sweden defeated the French qualifier, 6-2, 6-4 in an hour and 20 minutes. In the second round, Peterson will play Jaqueline Cristian.
The Romanian lucky loser posted a comeback win in her first-round match against Russia’s Kamilla Rakhimova. Cristian needed two hours and six minutes to complete a 2-6, 6-2, 7-5 victory.
The other comeback win of the day came in favour of Xinyu Wang. The Chinese qualifier outlasted fellow qualifier, Ukraine’s Kateryna Kozlova, 2-6, 6-2, 6-3. Wang needed an hour and 45 minutes to turn the match around. Wang will play top seed Emma Raducanu next.
Kozlova’s compatriot, Anhelina Kalinina, meanwhile, fared well in her opening-round encounter against Italy’s Martina Trevisan. Kalinina won 6-4, 6-3 in an hour and 28 minutes against Trevisan to reach the round-of-16 where she’ll face fourth seed Veronika Kudermetova.
Alize Cornet’s the only French player left in the main draw of the Upper Austria Ladies Linz. Cornet took her place in the round-of-16 following a 7-6(7), 6-4 win over Austrian wildcard, Julie Grabher in two hours and two minutes. Cornet will have a face-off against Alison Riske next.
