Captain Igor Andreev reacts to Russia winning first BJK Cup title since 2008

Captain Igor Andreev was proud of his team after Russia won this year’s Billie Jean King Cup title.

Russia made the Billie Jean King Cup final six years ago but failed to win it all.

This week, Russia returned to the Billie Jean King Cup final but this time delivered as they beat Switzerland 2-0 to win their fifth title in the competition.

It was Russia’s first Billie Jean King Cup title since 2008.

“It’s an historical win for us,” captain Andreev said, per the Billie Jean King Cup website. “It’s been a long time without any trophies in team tennis. I’m very proud and very happy for the girls, the way they played. They’re amazing, they’re heroes, and they achieved this because they’re a team – a real team – and real friends.”

In the opening rubber of the final, Kasatkina beat Jil Teichman 6-2 6-4 to give Russia an early lead.

“It’s an amazing feeling,” Kasatkina said after her win. “I played the first match [for RTF], now I’m playing in the final, and I’m happy that I’ve brought this very important point to my team. The beginning [of the match] was very important. We were both nervous, but I think I managed that a little bit better, and I was not missing. It’s different to start a match 4-0 up or 4-0 down – I that was the key.”

In the following rubber, Samsonova didn’t crush under pressure as she surprised Belinda Bencic 3-6 6-3 6-4 to clinch the key point for Russia.

“I have too manty emotions now – I feel like I’m freezing,” Samsonova said. “It’s unbelievable, I’m unbelievably happy. Today was an incredible fight – a much more nervous game. It was more than tennis.”

Bencic won gold medal for Switzerland at the Tokyo Olympics and she was determined to lead her country to the Billie Jean King Cup title.
