Iga Swiatek explains why canceling WTA Finals in 2020 was right thing to do

Polish tennis star Iga Swiatek insists she wasn’t particulary disappointed after the WTA Finals got called off last year.

Swiatek was the fifth on the Race to the WTA Finals but the season-ending event was canceled due to the pandemic.

However, Swiatek is set to make her WTA Finals debut this month.

“I wouldn’t say that I was disappointed because last year was pretty tricky for me,” Swiatek admitted to the New York Times.

“I was happy that Roland Garros was the last tournament because I could learn how to deal with all the new reality and new obligations.”

Swiatek thought calling off the WTA Finals was the right thing to do since she believes it wouldn’t have been fair to stage the event when there were no many tournaments in 2020.

“It wouldn’t have been fair [to contest the finals] since there were so few tournaments and many players didn’t play,” she explained.

“I know that the Covid situation and the break that we had on tour probably helped me a lot. I don’t know if I would have had the same success if we didn’t have COVID-19.”

Swiatek donated a total of $50,000 – $25,000 to two non-profit health organizations as she hopes her donation will help someone who is battling a mental illness.

“Both foundations – @fundacjaslonienabalkonie and @dajemydzieciomsile – will use this money to hire new psychotherapists to work with children and teenagers who struggle with depression, anxiety, violence and suicidal thoughts,” Swiatek explained.

“Never in those foundations’ history has the demand for therapy been so high as it is now, mainly because of the pandemic. Thank you for your invaluable contribution to this choice. I hope that we will help together more than once in the future. If you would like to contribute even more to this help, you can make a small donation to a foundation or share an educational post from its channels on your social media. Together we can make a great impact.”
