‘Roger Federer spearheaded this’, says former World No.1

“I am very well, the rehabilitation is proceeding step by step and the worst is now behind us. When you come back from injury, every day is a better day. I’ve been through it last year, so it’s not a mental problem at all. I would like to play the Laver Cup 2022 in London, I hope to be able to return and be on the pitch there”. With these words, spoken on Swiss radio Srfsport, Roger Federer updated fans about his current physical condition and sent a clear message to the event he created to pay homage to the Australian legend. Due to continuous knee problems, the Swiss champion, for the first time, will not fight with the players of Team Europe to win the Laver Cup. Federer will in fact return to the field next year, even if the date of the official return is not it is still clear. In addition to the Swiss, this edition of the team tournament will also have to do without Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal. The Serbian has decided to take a few weeks off after the intense emotions felt at the US Open; while the Spaniard is struggling with an injury to his left foot, which forced him to close early in 2021. Team Europe will still be the favorites, considering that within their team there will only be players in the top 10. These are Daniil Medvedev, Stefanos Tsitsipas, Alexander Zverev, Andrey Rublev, Matteo Berrettini and Casper Ruud. Team World, which will seek its first success in the event, will instead be formed by Diego Schwartzman, Denis Shapovalov, Felix Auger-Aliassime, Reilly Opelka, John Isner and Nick Kyrgios. “In our sport, we don’t have enough stages for former great tennis players and legends,” Federer explained in an interview with the New York Times.

McEnroe opens up on Roger Federer

John McEnroe believes Roger Federer and Rod Laver’s association with the Laver Cup greatly increases the value of the tournament. McEnroe, who is reprising his role as captain of Team World this year, also expressed his delight at being able to participate in a team event in tennis. “So an event like this brings something new to the table for our sport, and I think it’s awesome,” he added. “You know, we get to sort of rally behind each other. Obviously in tennis there is not coaching very often, so it’s just nice to be part of it in a small way for this week.” McEnroe further revealed that Rod Laver has always been his idol, while asserting that Roger Federer is a “total class act.” “Rod Laver was my idol. Roger Federer obviously is a total class act,” McEnroe said. “He spearheaded this, getting this event started. To me, it’s like a win-win for everyone. It’s a no-brainer.”
