Ostrava Open: Emphatic Anett Kontaveit denies Maria Sakkari to lift title

Anett Kontaveit won the Ostrava Open title after beating Maria Sakkari 6-2, 7-5 in the final on Sunday. The Estonian needed an hour and 32 minutes to clinch victory over the fourth-seeded Greek.

Kontaveit, who’d upset the second-seeded Petra Kvitova shrugging aside a 2-5 deficit in their head-to-head, did the same in the final against Sakkari. Entering into the final, Sakkari had six wins to Kontaveit’s four in their head-to-head, including two wins in three previous meetings in 2021. However, Kontaveit was unplayable in the Czech city.

Kontaveit wrapped up the opening set quickly. She broke Sakkari early in the set and then went on to save the only break point she faced in the set before securing a second break to take the lead in the match. The biggest differentiator between the two players was also seen in the second-serve points each won. Kontaveit won almost 67% of her second-serve points while Sakkari could only manage to win 27%.

Ostrava Open: Anett Kontaveit extends her career surge

The second set was way closer as neither player faced a break point across the first 11 games, despite their service games being pushed to deuce. In the 12th game, serving to stay in the match, the pressure told on Sakkari and she faced three championship points. And at the end of a lengthy rally, Kontaveit went on to convert the win on the first championship point with a winner.

Throughout the week in the Czech Republic, Kontaveit didn’t lose a set. In the final, she finished with 26 winners and 17 unforced errors. Sakkari had 20 winners off her racquet but finished with 23 unforced errors.

The Ostrava Open final is Anett Kontaveit’s third career title and her second – after the Cleveland Open – in the 2021 season. Meanwhile, for Maria Sakkari, despite her loss, the takeaway from the week is immense. The Greek will break into the top-10 of the WTA rankings for the first time in her career on Monday, 27th September.
