Marton Fucsovics has had an excellent Wimbledon so far, having reached the quarter-finals with full merit. The Hungarian tennis player eliminated the black beast Andrey Rublev in the fourth round, coming to the head of a difficult match in which he found himself under him for two sets to one. The next obstacle in his path will be ATP No. 1 Novak Djokovic, who has always beaten him in head-to-head matches at ATP level. The 34-year-old from Belgrade walked in the first week, never giving the feeling of shifting into high gears. Even in the second round the Serbian took a single bite out of poor Cristian Garin. The 19-time Grand Slam champion is on the hunt for his sixth seal at the Championships, which allows him to continue dreaming of the ‘Calendar Golden Slam’. In a press conference after the victory over Rublev, Fucsovics analyzed his upcoming match against Djokovic. The Hungarian also made an interesting parallel with Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal (Novak’s two great rivals).
Fucsovics on facing Novak Djokovic
“Obviously he (Novak Djokovic) is one of the greatest players,” Marton Fucsovics said. “He won this tournament so many times. He’s very solid, very consistent from the baseline. He’s playing his best tennis. He won the French Open lately, and now he’s playing really good.” The Hungarian admitted Djokovic might not have as much flair as Roger Federer or Rafael Nadal, but highlighted how the Serb’s groundstrokes have “impressive acceleration.” “His style might not be as flashy as Roger’s or Rafa’s, but he has impressive acceleration in all of his shots whether it’s backhand or forehand,” added Fucsovics. “I have no doubt that the members of the Big 3 are the best players in the history of tennis,” stated the Hungarian. “For me there are no differences between them, it is impossible to choose one over the other. Now all I want is to focus on my job and be ready to give my best against Novak.” With this win, Fucsovics reaches his first Grand Slam quarterfinal, recording 41 winners and 27 unforced errors. He will face Novak Djokovic in the last eight of the tournament. Fucsovics and Djokovic met for the first time in the first round of the 2018 US Open. The Serb beat the Hungarian 6-3, 3-6, 6-4, 6-0. They met for the second time in 2019, in the Round of 16 at the Qatar Open. Djokovic won 4-6, 6-4, 6-1.
