Denis Shapovalov, Karen Khachanov sign up to play Washington

Rising Canadian star Denis Shapovalov and 2018 Paris Masters champion Karen Khachanov have both signed up to play an ATP 500 event in Washington.

Shapovalov, ranked at No. 12 in the world, is set to make his third appearance in Washington.

Shapovalov suffered a first round exit at the Washington event in 2016, before making the round-of-16 two years later.

Meanwhile, Khachanov is also set to make his third appearance in Washington.

Khachanov collected back-to-back second round showings at the Washington event in 2018 and 2019.

Shapovalov beat Roberto Bautista Agut to make the Wimbledon quarterfinal.

“I played some really high-level tennis today,” Shapovalov said. “I got a little bit nervous in the third set, but that is totally normal, and I dealt with that really well. I played flawlessly and I am super happy with myself.”

“To beat a player like [Roberto] Bautista Agut in straight sets backs up my level from my match against Andy [Murray]. I am happy, I feel like I am improving every single match. I knew it was going to be a process on this surface, to really develop my game on it. I have always loved playing on it [grass], it is just about getting comfortable.”

Meanwhile, Khachanov edged out Sebastian Korda to also reach the Wimbledon quarterfinal.

“With the nerves, you have 13 breaks in the fifth set,” Khachanov said. “When you are returning better, you start to read the serves better. Then in the rallies, both of us were more stressed. In the end, the one who dealt better won the match. It was more about this than who played better.

“I think this year, I have had many close matches like this, and for me, I think it is one of my most important wins. I am super happy. Once you are in the quarter-finals, expectations go up. I will try to prepare well [ahead of facing Denis Shapovalov] and hopefully it will be a good match.”
