At the end of the quarter-finals at the Viking International, no seeds are left in the Eastbourne draw.
Italy’s Camila Giorgi ousted the last remaining seed, top-seed and the fourth-ranked Aryna Sabalenka in their last-eight clash. Giorgi won 7-6(5), 0-6, 6-4 after two hours and 18 minutes of play. Both players were inconsistent throughout the match though Giorgi managed to hold her nerves and settle her game long enough to pull off an upset.
Giorgi, who qualified into the main draw, trailed Sabalenka by a break in the opening and deciding set before making a comeback. The world no. 75 ended the match with just 23 winners to Sabalenka’s 29 but had nine fewer errors than the Belarusian’s 43.
Viking International: Jelena Ostapenko betters herself
In the semi-final, Giorgi will play Anett Kontaveit. The Estonian saved a match point to come through against Swiss qualifier Viktorija Golubic 2-6, 7-6(2), 7-5 after two hours and 34 minutes of play. Their semi-final match will be the first meeting between Giorgi and Kontaveit.
In the second half of the draw, Jelena Ostapenko came from a set down to take down Daria Kasatkina. The Latvian won 1-6, 7-5, 6-2 in an hour and 46 minutes. This is Ostapenko’s first semi-final in almost two years, since the 2019 Luxembourg Open. Back then, Ostapenko went all the way to claim the title. Meanwhile, here in Eastbourne, this is Ostapenko’s best result, eclipsing her previous result of making it to the quarter-finals in 2018.
Speaking about her performance, in her post-match press conference, Ostapenko said, “The main thing, probably I was playing more aggressive today and tried to put as much pressure as possible on her. In the second set, I was fighting very hard to win it. I think in the third set I already found my game and played much better.”
For a place in the Viking International final, Ostapenko will take on Elena Rybakina. The Kazakh saved two match points to defeat lucky loser Anastasija Sevastova and thwart a Latvian semi-final derby in the event. After two hours and 30 minutes of play, Rybakina prevailed 2-6, 7-6(7), 7-6(5) against Sevastova.
