ATP Mallorca 2021: Djokovic’s doubles wins and the day 3 HIGHLIGHTS

At the ATP Mallorca Championships 2021, Dominic Thiem, against Adrian Mannarino in the closing match of the day, is forced to retire due to an injury to his right wrist, the extent of which will be assessed in the coming days. The Austrian, however, was 5-2 ahead in the first set when he decided to retire as a precaution so as not to compromise the situation in view of the upcoming Wimbledon.

In the other matches of the day comes the victory of Daniil Medvedev. After his debut defeat in Halle, the Russian hits his first grass-court victory of the season, outclassing the young Corentin Moutet with a clear 6-4 6-2, thus gaining access to the quarter-finals where he will find Casper Ruud. The Norwegian found his first victories on grass-courts of his entire career in the 250 in Mallorca: after Simon, Sandgren also folds in two sets (6-3, 6-4 the score) to the fifth player of the seeding. A rather complex victory for the specialist Sam Querrey who needs the tie-break of the third set and 22 aces before winning against Carballes-Baena. Remarkable the comeback of Ugo Humbert: the fresh winner of the Halle tournament took a set and a break from Kecmanovic, saving himself at the tie-break of the second and then dominating the third set, won by a score of 6-2.

On the central court also Novak Djokovic was the protagonist who, as already done in other circumstances, decided to break in ahead of Wimbledon by playing the doubles tournament. The world number one and fresh winner of Roland Garros won the match with the Spaniard Gomez-Herrera against the duo formed by Brkic and Caci. The Serbian-Spanish duo won 13-11 in the decisive tie-break match with a double match point canceled by their rivals.
