‘Serena Williams and I won’t play mixed doubles at Wimbledon this year,’ says Murray

The three-time Major winner Andy Murray will not compete in the mixed doubles at this year’s Wimbledon, throwing everything on the singles draw after receiving a wild card. Two years ago, Andy shared the court with the 23-time Major winner Serena Williams at the All England Club, beating two rivals before falling to Melichar and Soares in the third round in three sets. Andy and Serena will not team up again, as the Briton wants to focus on his singles campaign and a notable result after only three wins so far in 2021. At Queen’s last week, Andy defeated Benoit Paire in straight sets for his first success since the beginning of March before falling to an eventual champion Matteo Berrettini.

Andy had struggled with a groin injury in March, skipping Miami and the entire clay season (he did train in Rome) to focus on the home events on grass. Murray has been dealing with injuries since 2017, losing the ATP throne and falling through the rankings like never before. After a couple of wins following the season’s restart last August, Andy finished the season on a losing streak and worked hard during the off-season to prepare for a fresh start in 2021.

Andy Murray will compete only in singles at the upcoming Wimbledon.

The Briton tested positive for the coronavirus just before the Australia trip to experience another setback, staying away from the court for a couple of weeks and entering the Biella Challenger, Montpellier and Rotterdam. After another break, Murray decided to skip Roland Garros and make a comeback on grass, playing well against Paire at Queen’s before suffering a heavy loss to an in-form Berrettini in an hour and 25 minutes.

“No, I hadn’t planned the mixed doubles this time; singles is enough for me. Getting through singles matches has proved challenging enough the last year or so, and I’ll stick to singles this year. In the build-up to Queen’s, I was doing like one hard day and a light one. I wanted to practice with Marin Cilic at Queen’s today, but the rain prevented that. I want to play as many sets this week and get ready for Wimbledon,” Andy Murray said.
