‘Rafael Nadal match at Roland Garros would be very exciting,’ says Alexander Zverev

World no. 6 Alexander Zverev made a slow start of this year’s clay swing, struggling with injury since March and suffering early losses in Monte Carlo and Munich. Alexander found his A-game in Madrid, playing well on fast clay at Caja Magica and toppling Rafael Nadal and Dominic Thiem to advance into the title match. Seeking his first Masters 1000 crown since 2019, Zverev ousted Matteo Berrettini 6-7, 6-4, 6-3 after two hours and 40 minutes, lifting the fourth Masters 1000 title and gaining confidence ahead of Rome and Roland Garros. Last week, the German lost to Nadal in the quarter-final, unable to recover from a grueling encounter against Kei Nishikori from the previous night and setting eyes on Roland Garros. Alexander was the quarter-finalist in Paris in 2018 and 2019, achieving his best results at Majors ahead of 2020, when he became a title contender.

Alexander Zverev feels confident ahead of Roland Garros.

Feeling feet and motivated, Zverev believes he can go deep in Paris in a couple of weeks, riding on that Madrid Open wave and dreaming about the first Major crown. Playing against the king of clay Rafael Nadal twice in as many weeks, Zverev would love to arrange another meeting against the Spaniard at Roland Garros, saying it would be an exciting match to watch. Alexander overpowered Rafa in Madrid, delivering his third straight victory over the 20-time Major winner and the first on clay. After overcoming a 4-2 deficit in the opener, the German had the upper hand, standing as the more aggressive and determined player in a 6-4, 6-4 victory. A week later, Rafa served revenge in Rome, beating Alexander 6-3, 6-4 en route to his tenth Foro Italico title.

“I think that I have chances in Paris this year. I feel okay and fit. I’m ready for this step. The tournament in Madrid gave me a lot of confidence. I’ve been playing well lately. If Rafael Nadal and I meet in Paris, it will be an exciting match. Following the last year’s US Open, I want to win a Major even more. I think I’ve been a better tennis player since then. I sat down and thought I had to improve things and do them differently,” Alexander Zverev said.
