After having surprisingly conquered the Roland Garros 2020, last year, the young Polish tennis player Iga Swiatek confirms that she is a really tough tennis player on clay-courts and she has won the Italian Open 2021, in Rome.
The talented tennis player had to face several obstacles during the tournament, but she clearly and quite sensationally won the final where she won with a double 6-0; 6-0 against the Czech Karolina Pliskova.
If on the one hand the merits of the winner of Rome must be recognized, it must also be said that the opponent ran into the most classic of bad days. At the press conference, the tennis player talked about the final and much more during the tournament and now Swiatek, as reigning champion, is a candidate to be Ashleigh Barty’s main rival for Roland Garros.
Swiatek’s words at the conference
At the end of the tournament victory and the match against Pliskova, the young Pole made the following statements. She said: “Winning here is a great experience for me. We can say that this tournament can be divided into two phases, a very complicated first part where I was sick and thought I could not compete but as the races went by I felt better and focused on the match.
I had a great staff around me who told me not to worry and to avoid everything. I think that playing two games in one day paradoxically helped me, maybe I was more tired but I found a very competitive pace that did me well also in the final and helped me win against Pliskova.”
On the performance of the opponent, clearly beaten, Swiatek commented: “I do not know what happened to Karolina for her competition, initially I thought she was nervous and for this reason she could not close the games.Winning a 6-0 set is not easy and in fact you know that your opponent can react and she can start doing better.
Top Ten? I am proud to have found continuity and this was one of my goals at the beginning of the season. My career is making progress, initially after Roland Garros it was frustrating and now I am happy to have entered the Top Ten. It was what I wanted and I hope to climb other positions in the standings.”
