Roger Federer: ‘It is important to first see how the body and the mind will…’

On the ATP Tour there is great uncertainty regarding the celebration of the Olympic Games in Tokyo 2021. It is clearly a stop that many of the main exponents of the circuit are waiting for, including the Swiss Roger Federer who continues to have the pending account of the medal golden in the singles mode. The Swiss tennis player, 39 years old and current number 8 in the world, acknowledged that “it is a difficult situation. You don’t hear much. That makes me think that the Games will be played, although I have heard that many people in Tokyo are against the Games. Apparently many are not vaccinated either. I honestly don’t know what to think. I would love to play the Olympics, winning a medal for Switzerland would make me proud. But if it is not possible because of the situation, I would be the first to understand it. What I think athletes need is a decision, whether to dispute it or not. For now the impression is yes. We know that it is a variable situation, “added the winner of 20 Grand Slams. During his time at the Olympic Games, Federer has won two Olympic medals. The first was in Beijing 2008, and he was gold in the doubles modality, teaming up with the Swiss Stan Wawrinka. Four years later, at London 2012, he took silver in the singles. It is also a reality that the “express” does not live the best moment of it. He has barely played a tournament in the last year of competition and is just aiming to return this week on clay in Geneva, his pre-Roland Garros stop.

Roger Federer was out of action for over a year due to a knee injury

Roger Federer will be playing behind closed doors at the 2021 Geneva Open, where he is the top seed. Speaking to RTS on Friday, Federer mentioned that he has had fun following the proceedings of the tour since its resumption in August last year, even with several results being on expected lines. Even though Roger Federer is a lot fitter now than he was during the Qatar Open, he believes he needs to be patient with regard to his physical and mental state. “Here, I must first look at the draw, which will necessarily be complicated,” Federer said. “But to be honest, it is important to first see how the body and the mind will react, because I believe that my tennis is still there.” Federer was practicing with former Grand Slam champion Marin Cilic, who is competing at the tournament too. Roger, surrounded by members of his team Severin Luthi and Ivan Ljubicic, is moving in the right direction with his preparations. Reflecting on Federer’s past season, he has barely played any tennis over the past 15 months. After his semifinal defeat at the Australian Open 2020, he injured his knee and had to undergo two knee surgeries. The recovery process kept him away from the men’s circuit.
