In the second round match of the WTA Mutua Madrid Open 2021, the number one seeded and big favorite of the tournament Ashleigh Barty struggled much more than expected to win in three sets against Slovakian tennis player Tamara Zidansek, finishing in three hours of play with the result of 6-4 1-6 6-3.
The opponent has certainly offered a good performance but Barty has disappointed expectations and will have to do much more for the next match where she will face the winner of the last Roland Garros, the young Pole Iga Swiatek.
In the press conference, the tennis player talked about the match played and revealed her impressions ahead of the 3rd round. Here are her words specifically: “It was a fairly difficult march, I think I stopped Tamara’s good performance in the best possible way but it was really hard.
I made a lot of unforced errors and this launched my opponent who was able to return to the match. In the end, the meeting was decided by small details in my doing and I have to keep in mind that I have to improve in view of my next challenges.
Barty: “The challenge with Swiatek? An exciting match”
Muscle fatigue? I’m not tired and I certainly can’t wait to play as many challenges as possible, especially on clay where the legs get used to the pitch very well. I’m not surprised with my opponent’s game, I knew it was going to be tough.
The challenge with Swiatek? An exciting match will be our first challenge. I am looking forward to this match, I met her closely in Melbourne and I think she plays really well. It’s a challenge on clay that I’ve wanted for a long time and now I can say that I can’t wait to face it.”
On the difference between the surfaces, Barty said: “I love to play on grass, but the matches on clay are fascinating. I can’t and don’t know how to answer this question, also because I grew up on hard courts. Every week I change surface and conditions, I just try to adapt as much as possible and find something that benefits my style of play.”
