Alizé Cornet furious for the Roland Garros postponement

The Roland Garros changed date: in Paris announced the decision to postpone the tournament by one week, which will now be held from 24 May to 13 June 2021. This can only have important repercussions on the entire men’s and women’s season, as the first grass matches will take place right in the opening week of June, while Wimbledon, which all players look forward to after last year’s cancellation, will begin just two weeks after the French Open.

The decision will therefore lead to inevitable and justified discussions, especially by athletes and tournament organizers. Among the players who disagree with this choice, there is already the Frenchwoman Alizé Cornet, who vented all her anger live during a television broadcast.

Cornet: “There will be consequences”

Thirty-one years old in January and world number 11 in 2009, Alizé reached the round of 16 in all Grand Slam tournaments, as well as having won 6 titles on the WTA Tour.

Talking about the postponement with Roxana Maracineau, current minister of sport of the French Republic, she said bluntly: “Let him stay with us, but our minister of sport is a disaster. I’m sorry, I have nothing against her, but she does nothing but make bad decisions for our discipline. It’s like she doesn’t care. I know that all this has depended on the government, I am quite convinced of it.”

The Frenchwoman player then added: “To be honest, it’s a rather selfish decision. The calendar will be affected by the postponement. This is my first reaction. I realize that it is not an easy time for the tournament, but you have to think about the players, the calendar, all the tournaments that try to fit into the schedule. I don’t know now how things will go.”

In the last edition of Roland Garros, Cornet stopped in the second round against Shuai Zang, defeated in two sets. Alizé Cornet in her career won a total of 6 WTA singles and 3 doubles tournaments, reaching the 11th position in the world rankings in February 2009.

In the Grand Slam tournaments she boasts as her best result the round of 16, reached at the Australian Open 2009 , at Wimbledon 2014, at Roland Garros 2015 and at Roland Garros 2017. In the doubles he boasts three round of 16 obtained at the Australian Open 2014, the Australian Open 2019 and Wimbledon 2019; while she in mixed doubles she boasts two quarter-finals at the Australian Open 2009 and at Roland Garros 2014.
