Matteo Manassero started the Italy Pro Tour

The 15th season of the Italy Pro Tour golf starts from Abruzzo with the National Open Championship. Until Sunday at the Miglianico Golf & Country Club (Chieti) 120 competitors will compete for the title.

Matteo Manassero in Abruzzo

Among these also Matteo Manassero, favorite on the eve, returning from two consecutive second places – in as many appearances in 2021 – on the Alps Tour that allowed him to climb to the top of the ranking regarding the order of merit of the third men’s European circuit. Giulio Castagnara will defend the title. Among the past winners also Jacopo Vecchi Fossa (winner in 2018), Enrico Di Nitto (scored in 2017) and Filippo Bergamaschi (champion in 2016). There is also expectation for the amateur Gregorio De Leo, whose 2021 got off to a great start with success at the Men’s International Championships of Italy and two Top 10s on the Alps Tour. The event, behind closed doors (due to Covid), will offer a total prize pool of 50,000 euros.

His debut in Augusta was in a white suit, in 2006, as a caddy for his brother Edoardo (on the field as holder of the US Amateur Championship title). All alongside the legend of all time, Tiger Woods, reigning champion at the time. This is how Francesco Molinari met “The Masters”, scheduled this year from Thursday 8 to Sunday 11 April. Thirteen years after that special experience, the Turin champion touched perhaps the greatest feat of his career. In 2019 he stroked the title, then closing the competition in fifth place and opening the way, due to some decisive errors on the “Amen Corner”, right in Woods. From that moment the climb to the top of the world ranking for the Piedmontese has stopped. And now at the Augusta National “Laser Frankie”, against all odds, he will try to take what he only touched two years ago.

Two weeks ago, the 15-time major champion announced he is back home and continuing his recovery. “Happy to report that I am back home and continuing my recovery. I am so grateful for the outpouring of support and encouragement that I have received over the past few weeks.”
