‘Roger Federer almost never took a bad decision in his career’, says former star

Roger Federer’s long-awaited return to the ATP circuit finally came true: the 39-year-old from Basel took part in the Qatar Open in Doha at the beginning of March, overcoming Daniel Evans with difficulty before coming out at the hands of a revived Nikoloz Basilashvili, future champion of the tournament. King Roger has decided to skip the next appointment in Dubai, where he was nevertheless immortalized in a video together with a fan, who approaches him to ask for a photo with the mask recklessly lowered. “It’s my lucky day,” the fan seems to say, who in the meantime tries to get closer to the eight-time Wimbledon champion. “Let’s keep a bit of distance”, comments kindly Federer, who prefers to give priority to safety. Former Wimbledon champion Marion Bartoli and journalist Ben Rothenberg recently spoke at length about Roger Federer and his comeback. According to Bartoli, even though Federer wouldn’t want to lose all of his records, he is unlikely to try and protect them if that comes at the cost of his health.

Bartoli talks about Roger Federer

“Roger Federer already got beaten in the No. 1 weeks by Djokovic and I don’t think he wants to lose all his records,” Marion Bartoli said. “But I don’t think he wants to put his body on the line just for one record. He has achieved enough.” The Frenchwoman sounded confident that the Swiss’s decision to play the clay season would reap dividends, as the demanding nature of the surface can help bring Federer back to shape. “Roger almost never took a bad decision in his career,” Bartoli said. “Living here in Dubai, I know, it’s really hot, so if he’s able to practise outside for a month, he’s going to get really fit. Clay is not about the matches, it’s about the fitness to play long matches. I think for him, clay will be the perfect way for him to get those muscles back working. The time he spends there will help him in match situations.” The 2021 tennis season has been an amazing one so far with many players displaying their extraordinary skills. This has led to some making predictions about who would be the best players this year. However, surprisingly, one name was left off this list – Roger Federer. Over the last year, Federer underwent 2 knee surgeries. He did manage to recover and make a comeback at the Qatar Open but his performance was far from his best. This, along with his age, is probably the reason why many feel that he will fall out of the top 10 this year. However, one can never count him out.
