Miami Open: Garbine Muguruza, Naomi Osaka keep momentum going

Four seeds crashed out in the second round of the Miami Open on Friday.

Liudmila Samsonova ousted 10th seed Kiki Bertens 6-2, 6-1 in just 55 minutes. This was the Russian’s first win over a player ranked in the top-20. In the third round, Samsonova will play 23rd seed Maria Sakkari. Sakkari defeated Arantxa Rus 6-2, 6-3 in their round-of-64 clash.

Sara Sorribes Tormo ended the run of the 13th-seeded American Jennifer Brady. The Spaniard dropped the opening set but scripted a comeback after two hours and 22 minutes of play, 3-6, 6-4, 6-1. In the next round, Sorribes Tormo will play 21st seed Elena Rybakina. The Kazakh defeated Kaia Kanepi 6-4, 6-1.

Anna Kalinskaya posted a 5-7, 6-2, 7-6(4) upset over 20th seed Petra Martic. The Russian will take on the in-form Garbine Muguruza for a place in the round-of-16. The 12th seed defeated wildcard Xinyu Wang 6-4, 6-1 in just 65 minutes in their second-round meeting.

Naomi Osaka won her 22nd straight match with a 7-6(3), 6-4 win over Ajla Tomljanovic. The Japanese, who could reclaim the no. 1 at the end of the tournament, hit 36 aces against the Australian who gave her quite some problems despite the straight-sets’ score-line. In the third round, Osaka will play Nina Stojanovic, who upset 26th seed Yulia Putintseva, 5-7, 7-5, 6-2.

Miami Open: Jessica Pegula sets another rematch with Karolina Pliskova

Sixth seed Karolina Pliskova will face Jessica Pegula for the third time this year after both won their respective second-round matches. Pliskova defeated Saisai Zheng 6-2, 6-1 while the 29th seed Pegula defeated Australian wildcard Storm Sanders 6-3, 6-4. In their previous two meetings this year, in Doha and Dubai, the American had emerged comprehensively victorious against the Czech.

Bianca Andreescu and Amanda Anisimova will take on each other for a place in the fourth round. The eighth-seeded Canadian defeated Tereza Martincova 7-6(5), 6-2 while the 28th-seeded American defeated former titlist Sloane Stephens 6-3, 6-3.

Ons Jabeur and Sofia Kenin have set up a third-round clash against each other. Jabeur, the 27th seed, defeated Paula Badosa 7-6(6), 5-7, 7-5 in two hours and 36 minutes. The fourth-seeded Kenin came from a set down to oust Andrea Petkovic 6-7(6), 6-1, 6-3 in an hour and 59 minutes.

Elise Mertens and Anett Kontaveit will play the last third-round match in the bottom half of the Miami Open. The 16th-seeded Mertens defeated Briton Katie Boulter 6-4, 6-1 while the 22nd-seeded Estonian got past Sorana Cirstea 6-3, 4-6, 6-4.
