After more than a year of absence from the tour, Roger Federer is back on the pitch in Doha to put some matches on his legs. The run of the Swiss phenomenon was already interrupted in the quarter-finals against Nikoloz Basilashvili, who would later win the trophy by liquidating Roberto Bautista Agut in the last act. The former world number 1, who also had a match point to access the semifinal, showed a fair physical condition considering the very long stop and the double operation on his right knee. The 20-time Grand Slam champion, however, is aware that he has to improve a lot if he wants to have a chance at Wimbledon and the Tokyo Olympics, which are the two great goals of the Swiss in this 2021. For this reason, King Roger has given up on tournaments in Dubai. and Miami, opting for an additional training block in view of the ‘campaign’ on clay. The schedule of the 39-year-old from Basel remains shrouded in mystery, although it is clear that Federer will not be able to make it to the Championships with so few games played. Meanwhile George Russell – a very young star of Formula 1 and already in the Mercedes orbit – mentioned the King of tennis in an interview with the portal ‘The Sportsrush’.
Russell on Roger Federer’s return
“If you’re demanding, I guess it’s got to be in a constructive way, and I’m glad they see it that way. I’m not easy to work with, I’m always pushing these guys for more in every single aspect. It doesn’t matter if it’s engineering, the designers, the aero guys, the marketing team, I’m always pushing for more to get the most out of everybody and that’s just the way I operate I guess” – George Russell said. The pre-season testing this season was for three days, as compared to the six days the last term. This did not impress Russell one bit, who chose a Roger Federer analogy to drive home his point. “I think it definitely affects you as a driver. We’ve been out all winter, and only getting one day for myself and one and a half for everyone else, it’s not a lot when you compare it to Roger Federer, who’s probably hitting a tennis ball every single day of his life for the last 20 years probably. It does affect us, but equally we’re all in the same boat, and it will add some different challenges to the mix, which equally means there is opportunity to be had. In our position, I have no objections to only having one day in the car.”
