Seventh seed Kristina Mladenovic was the biggest casualty on Tuesday at the St. Petersburg Open. Russian wildcard Margarita Gasparyan defeated the Frenchwoman 6-7(1), 6-1, 6-1 in two hours and 35 minutes in the first round.
In the second round, Gasparyan will play Katerina Siniakova. The Czech defeated Kirsten Flipkens 6-1, 6-2 in 63 minutes in their first-round clash.
Siniakova’s compatriot, Tereza Martincova set up a second-round meeting against top-seed Ekaterina Alexandrova. Martincova defeated Stefanie Voegele 6-0, 4-6, 6-4 in the first round.
St. Petersburg Open: Daria Kasatkina reaches second round
Russians, fifth seed Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova and eighth seed Daria Kasatkina, meanwhile, moved into the second round.
Pavlyuchenkova won against Turkish lucky loser Cagla Buyukakcay 6-4, 6-4. Kasatkina, however, had to toil in her straight-sets 6-4, 7-6(0) win over the in-form Clara Tauson.
The match between Kasatkina and Tauson featured 11 breaks of serve but the Russian never looked to be out of contention and in the second-set tiebreak, she blitzed past the teenager. After the match, Kasatkina complimented her opponent and said, “Clara was playing super aggressive, and I know that’s why she won in Lyon, because probably she likes to play indoors a lot. She’s going to be very dangerous on the hardcourts and indoors especially.”
Kasatkina will play Aliaksandra Sasnovich next.
Kamilla Rakhimova, who qualified for the main draw, won the first round Russian derby against Daria Mishina. Rakhimova needed an hour and 45 minutes to claim a 6-1, 6-7(2), 6-1 win. Her next round will be another derby, against the second-seeded Russian Veronika Kudermetova.
Vera Lapko advanced to the second round after her first-round opponent Jaqueline Cristian retired in the deciding set of their first-round match. At the time of the Romanian’s retirement, she was leading 6-7(3), 6-4, 2-1. Lapko will play sixth seed Jelena Ostapenko next.
Chinese qualifier Xinyu Wang set up a second-round meeting against fourth seed Svetlana Kuznetsova at the St. Petersburg Open. Wang ousted Viktoriya Tomova 6-1, 5-7, 7-5 in the first round.
