World No. 7 Alexander Zverev isn’t happy with the frozen ranking system and Roger Federer being ranked than him
Federer, who returned to action last week after being sidelined for 14 months, is ranked at No. 6 in the world.
While Federer was sidelined, Zverev finished runner-up at the US Open, runner-up at the Paris Masters and won two titles in Cologne.
“I’m Roger Federer’s biggest fan, but he hasn’t played in a year and is above me in the rankings. I have played a Grand Slam final, a Masters 1000 final, right now the system is a mess,” Zverev said, per We Are Tennis.
Zverev plays this week, Federer back to training
Zverev is set to return to action for the first time since the Australian Open as he plays in Acapulco this week.
After losing to Nikoloz Basilashvili in the Doha quarterfinal, Federer decided to return to the training.
“It’s been great to be back on the @atptour, loved every minute playing in Doha once again. A big thank you to the best and loyal team that helped me get here. I’ve decided it’s best to go back to training and as a result, I’ve decided to withdraw from Dubai next week,” Federer announced in a Twitter post.
Shortly after losing to Basilashvili, Federer said: “I haven’t decided yet with the team. I was going to speak to them once the tournament is over here. That’s the case now. So we’re going to do that probably tomorrow at some point or tonight, depending.
“But I didn’t want to talk about it after yesterday. Important was to rest and just think about the next match and actually enjoy also, honestly, the victory from yesterday was a big one. I got a ton of messages.
“Everybody was so happy for me. I was really happy. From that standpoint I’ll decide probably in the next 24 hours, I would assume.”
