Dubai Open: Garbine Muguruza bests Barbora Krejcikova to 1st Dubai title

Garbine Muguruza defeated Barbora Krejcikova 7-6(6), 6-3 to claim the Dubai Open title on Saturday.

The 63rd-ranked Krejcikova started off the match with a break but couldn’t hold on to her lead for long as Muguruza broke back to level the set at one game-all. A couple of games later, it was Muguruza’s turn to go up a break but she, too, was pegged back by the Czech. Muguruza’s first chances to take the set came on Krejcikova’s serve in the 12th game but the latter did well to hold on to her serve and take the set to the tie-break. In the tie-break, on her fourth set point, Muguruza went on to take the lead in the match.

As compared to the first set, the second set was relatively easier for Muguruza as she broke twice – first, in Krejcikova’s opening service game and then, in the eighth game as she was trying to stay in the match – to hoist the title.

Dubai Open: Garbine Muguruza’s the last woman standing

In her post-match press conference, Muguruza said that the match was way tougher than what the score-line indicated. “It was a tricky match. I didn’t have a feel for her. We never practised together, we never played before. I had to work so hard in the first set. The difference was one point and I’m happy it went my way. I think she played great. She’s a very talented player, good hands, good baseline game and I’m happy I was stronger today,” she said.

This was Muguruza’s eighth career title and the first this season. This was also her 18th win this season. No other player has won more matches this year than Muguruza. Lastly, Garbine Muguruza is also the first Spaniard to win the Dubai Open title.
