ATP Marseille: Stefanos Tsitsipas and Daniil Medvedev advance into the quarters

The top seed Daniil Medvedev is through to the quarter-final in Marseille, beating Egor Gerasimov 6-2, 6-4 in 71 minutes. The Russian saved the only break point he faced and delivered three breaks that carried him home in style. Daniil broke at 15 in the first game with a return winner and secured another return game to forge a 3-0 advantage. The Russian grabbed the fourth game with a volley winner and fired an ace in game six to open a 5-1 gap. Serving for the set at 5-2, Medvedev landed four winners to seal the first part of the encounter, hoping for more of the same in the rest of the clash. Daniil placed a return winner at 1-1 in set number two and sealed the deal with a service winner in game ten on his fifth match point. The two-time defending champion Stefanos Tsitsipas ousted Lucas Pouille 6-2, 6-3 in 64 minutes for his second victory over the French player in as many encounters.

The Greek lost only nine points in nine service games, losing serve once and delivering four return games to control the scoreboard and advance into the last eight. Stefanos made a strong start and grabbed a break in game two with a perfect drop shot that Lucas failed to catch. The better-ranked player secured the third game with a service winner and fired an ace down the T line for a 4-1 advantage. Standing strong on both serve and return, Tsitsipas placed a volley winner at the net to forge a 5-1 lead and served for the set in the next one.

Pouille found his best returns to pull one break back before the Greek secured another break in game eight for 6-2. Both players produced five comfortable holds at the beginning of the second set before Stefanos moved in front thanks to Lucas’ loose forehand. Serving for the win at 5-3, the Greek held at love to move over the top in style and remain on the course for the third consecutive Marseille title. World no. 138 Arthur Rinderknech is through to his first ATP quarter-final following a 3-6, 6-1, 6-2 win over the 7th seed Alejandro Davidovich Fokina. The French player fired 13 aces and got broken once in the opener, taking control after that to race over the finish line and into the last eight.
