Pierre-Hugues Herbert reflects on stunning Kei Nishikori in Marseille

French tennis player Pierre-Hugues Herbert was happy that he managed to implement his game plan to the fullest and earn a surprise win over former world No. 4 Kei Nishikori in Marseille.

Herbert, ranked at No. 93 in the world, handed a 6-1 6-4 loss to Nishikori.

Herbert claimed two breaks in the first set and lost no service games to easily win the opener.

Herbert then claimed the lone break of the second set in the seventh game, before serving out for the match in the 10th game.

“I knew I would need to be aggressive from the start, as I knew Kei would be better than me from the baseline,” said Herbert, per the ATP website. “I cannot complain about anything today and I stuck to my game plan from the beginning to the end. I am very happy with the win. I kept moving forwards and did let him play.”

Herbert through to the Marseille round-of-16 for the third time

Herbert now awaits the winner of the match between Cameron Norrie and Constant Lestienne.

Meanwhile, Nishikori was in positive spirits after making the Rotterdam quarterfinal last week.

“My shoulder is fine, I think it should be OK next week,” Nishikori said after losing to Borna Coric last week. “I think I could have stepped forward more often in today’s match and especially in the match ersus de Minaur. I still can’t move forward spontaneously, I’m discussing about the issue with my coach. I feel like I can have more opportunities to finish point earlier.

”I’m getting more confidence, but not 100% yet, sometimes I still hesitate (to take a full swing). It was not great today, but last two matches were good, if I can keep playing matches like them, I keep getting better. Hopefully this week will be a springboard.

”Finally I’ve started feeling like I can compete with players like Novak or Rafa to some extent. In Australia, I played Medvedev and I felt like it would be difficult to compete with top players, I hardly had a picture of that, but I think I’ve got some confidence this week.”
